Farm animal population
It was decided to use only the figures for cattle and pigs, to represent the farm animal population of the countries in the FOCUS study. These are good indicators of a country's animal production capacity. In addition most veterinary acts are carried out on this population.

France ranks first among the countries in the FOCUS study, with a total of 35 million cattle and pigs, with an equal number of each. Spain, the United Kingdom and Denmark have roughly the same number of animals (17, 15 and 13 million cattle and pigs respectively) despite the contrasting population and surface area of these countries. It is to be noted that the pattern for Denmark is different with a majority of pigs (12 million) over cattle. Romania ranks 5th in the study for cattle and pig population. The other countries have less than 6 million cattle and pigs: Hungary, Finland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
